Worksheet 1
Practice: Scientific Writing Style Comparison Chart
In your readings so far, you have probably noticed a difference in the writing style a psychologist uses when reporting results in a journal article compared to the writing a reporter uses in a magazine to report the results of a psychologistâs study. In addition to APA style and formatting, psychologists also use a scientific writing style when writing their reports.
Compare two pieces of writing: a media report (Petronis, 2012) and an empirical research report (Buboltz et al., 2001) using the following chart.
You will need to use Google Scholar to locate the Buboltz et al. (2001) article (full citation located in Materials).

Practice: Summarizing Research Studies
Question 1
Write a summary of Bushman and Andersonâs (2009) study using your answers to the Research Report Search questions (in Activity 2). Your research summary should include a snapshot of:
Why this study is necessary and important/purpose of study
Hypothesis
Participants
Methods used
Key findings/results
Limitations
Conclusions that were drawn from the research
What relevance the outcomes have for the rest of the world/ideas for future research
Question 2
Review: How did it go? Was it difficult? Be specific in your assessment.
Question 3
On a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 = not at all confident and 10 = completely confident, how confident are you that your summary contains no plagiarism? Justify your answer.
Question 4
Did you cite the authors in your summary? If no, why not?
Question 5
Summarize these sentences from the discussion section of the Bushman and Anderson (2009) article without plagiarizing:
In sum, the present studies clearly demonstrate that violent media exposure can reduce helping behavior in precisely the way predicted by major models of helping and desensitization theory. People exposed to media violence become âcomfortably numbâ to the pain and suffering of others and are consequently less helpful.
Question 6
Finally, write a summary of the Buboltz et al. (2001) article from Worksheet 1. Use the following checklist:
Why is this study necessary and important? What is its purpose?
What did the researchers predict would happen? (hypothesis)
Who were the participants?
What were the methods used?
What were the key findings of the study?
What were the limitations that the researchers ran into?
What conclusion was drawn from the research?
What kind of relevance does the research have for the wider world? (the big Why)
