First person:Children in middle childhood are very busy. They are constantly doing, planning, playing, getting together with friends, and achieving. If these energetic children view themselves as successful in their accomplishments, they will get a sense of competence for future challenges. If instead, a child feels that they are not measuring up to their peers, feelings of weakness and self-doubt will develop.
To help children have a successful resolution in this stage, they should be encouraged to explore their abilities. They should be given authentic feedback as well. Indeed, failure is a type of feedback which may help a child form a sense of modesty. A balance of competence is ideal for creating a sense of competence in the child. Teacher and parents can promote children’s self-esteem by encouraging their children every day, when they are feeling down or happy, they should always get encouraging words. They should be kept uplifted.
Second person: Middle schoolers feel pressured from unrealistic expectations. They can develop low self-esteem because he or she is not “living up” to the expectations that one sets for oneself. An early teen can sometimes be their hardest critic. Children’s self-esteem fluctuates as they go through different challenges in life, and they have different pressures in life that may affect them. Things like social media, bullying, exams, fear of failure, mistakes, new things, and family problems can impact a child’s self-esteem. Parents and teachers may expect too much of children. They can be more supportive by focusing on the positive, giving constructive criticism, setting realistic expectations, learning from mistakes, and encouraging children to find what they like about themself.
