Using the same practice issue from the Week 2 Discussion and an interdisciplinary theory you will be assigned, you will research your assigned theory for applications in addressing your practice issue. Although your focus is exploring one theory in depth, as you engage with colleagues, consider other theories that also apply to your practice issue. Learning from colleagues is particularly important and encouraged with this Discussion.
Post a brief descriiption of your assigned theory (Problem Based Learning Model) and your practice issue (medication errors in nursing homes). Then, explain how you would apply your assigned theory to your practice issue and explain your reasoning. Be specific and provide examples. Cite your sources in your post.
Main Question Post Week 2
The nursing practice issue identified in this paper is medication errors in nursing homes. Older adults with chronic illness often require long-term care and several medications to treat. Nursing home residents and their families require intensive care from the nurses. While not all medication errors may not be serious, some events can have fatal consequences on the lives of the residents due to nursing neglect. Common medication errors are associated with the administration of wrong medications and wrong doses (Bengtsson et al., 2021). The two nursing theories implicated in addressing the clinical nursing issue are Kolcaba’s theory of comfort and Watson’s caring theory.
Kolcaba’s comfort theory is intended to relieve discomfort among patients arising due to medication errors. The theoretical framework of the theory supports patient comfort (Oliveira et al., 2020). The application of comfort theory can benefit the nursing practice by reducing medication errors. The second theory, Watson’s theory of caring suggests that humans should not be treated as objects (Oliveira et al., 2020). The theory focuses on the caring-to-caring transpersonal relationship and the healing potential for the patients. The science of caring is based on ten carative factors.
Watson emphasizes that nurses should care for themselves to be able to care effectively for the patients. This is likely to reduce the likelihood of fatigue, burnout, and likelihood of medication errors (Gunawan et al., 2022). Caring guided by Watson’s theory improves patient satisfaction as well as patient outcomes. The chief significance of the two theories is that they do not only focus on symptomatic relief for the patients but rather on overall care for the patients. Moreover, Watson’s theory also ensures that nurses look after themselves to maintain their emotional well-being and caring attitudes toward the patients.
