EXTRA CREDIT Paper information The three different articles in this folder present aspects of Psychobiology that involve the intersection of nature and nurture around masculine behavior and the biological role of hormones. Together, they draw on general assumptions that we all hold about what masculinity is (and by contrast what is femininity), and what causes it. • To one degree or another, this is an area where each of us is informed by ‘common sense’ and what ‘everyone knows’, as well as by individual experience and what role we think biology plays. It’s complicated. So there is no specific correct answer to some of the points below In 2500 words or less, your paper will be expected to address the following areas. – Describe the main points of the findings in the Study by Sapolsky, the article by P. Carl, and the ESPN report on Michelle Carter. You should also open links in the Carter article. – What binds the articles together in your view, with respect to culture and the role it plays. How does that differ from what one can expect as a result of the biological actions of hormones? o How does it relate to biological determinism and the course material on sexual differentiation? In what ways are steroid hormones causal in reproduction, but permissive (or ‘influential’ in behavior. md – Consider the general assumptions that you have grown up with about nature/nurture and masculinity. o To do that you’ll need to define what masculinity is (and of course femininity as well because the two are often regarded as reciprocal). ▪ In what ways has the material in the course and in these articles, confirmed or confused or challenged your views. Be specific about the reasons. – What might be the benefits and constraints of applying your views relative to the organization of the larger society we live in. Some Specifics: a. Your paper can be constructed as an essay or divided up into sections addressing the points above. There no fixed answers to these questions. It will be graded on the quality of critical thinking that goes into your answers. I grade all papers, recognizing that this isn’t an English class; grade is not based on grammatical construction or spelling errors. b. Up to 4 points of extra credit can be awarded, which will be added to your final grade based on the quizzes and midterms. The points will be posted on BB within a week to ten days after submission. c. The paper format is up to you, but please cite source materials with enough detail that I can retrieve them. Websites, articles, and books are fine. The paper should be typed and submitted through e-mail as a text file or word document file. No google doc or pdfs or other variants will be accepted. If I can’t open it directly in Word, it won’t be accepted. d. Submission is only through e-mail (rmcgivern@sdsu.ed) and to be sent on Friday, Dec 9th between 12 am and 11 pm. No early or late papers outside of this window will be accepted. e. Please don’t send your paper to the TAs or ask them to go over it before you submit it. That’s not part of their job description.
