Holding Hard Stories, Goodyear-Brown gives some power information in a simplified way with regards to play therapy. Children who experience trauma hold on to the stories. Goodyear talks about play therapy and how children are able to enter into a safe environment and release their story to someone who will hold it for them. She talks about a safe environment the children enter in to tell their story, keeping a child feeling safe can help avoid retraumatization. Allowing expression through play keep children in their comfort zone and allows them to speak a language that is known to them a natural medium of expression. Play therapy is a transformative way children can retell the story or traumatic events in their lives. According to Goodyear-Brown, the environment children are during therapy is a safe space where children have freedom to choose how and what to play with giving them freedom of expression, and children are encouraged to share their story.
This footage relates to the reading material as it talks about settings where you find mental health counselor, different agencies mentioned this week like family service agencies, private practices and youth services agencies would incorporate play therapy. I like the method and as a future counselor I would use play therapy in my practice.
