Conceptual papers are papers without data that highlight assumptions, premises, axioms, assertions, etc. While conceptual papers do not present original data, they must present an original concept. Authors of conceptual papers aim to synthesize knowledge from previous work on a particular topic, and present it in a new context to provide a springboard for new research that will fill knowledge gaps. These types of papers often connect existing theories in novel ways, link work across disciplines, provide multi-level insights, and broaden the scope of our thinking. Conceptual papers often propose new relationships among constructs. Rather than testing them empirically, authors of conceptual papers develop thorough, logical arguments about these theoretical associations. “Empirical and conceptual papers ultimately share a common goal: to create new knowledge by building on carefully selected sources of information combined according to a set of norms” (Jaakola, 2020, p. 2). According to Gilson & Goldberg (2015), conceptual papers “do not have data, because their focus is on integration and proposing new relationships among constructs” (p. 127). The authors must develop logical and complete arguments for proposed associations in lieu of testing them empirically (Gilson & Goldberg, 2015). Consequently, a well-developed and plausible argument is central to these types of papers. The conceptual paper of the CP seeks to show how in-home therapy for the Medicaid population of New York will be based on the systems theory of social work. This theory posits that behavior and beliefs are shaped by the systems of an individual’s life (family, culture, work, income, etc.) (Luhmann, Baecker, & Gilgen, 2013). For this capstone project, the systems theory will be the primary model that explains how in-home mental healthcare can improve public mental health on micro and macro levels. The conceptual paper will use the systems theory to show how in-home mental health services will increase client compliance, reduce hospitalization, increase help-seeking behavior, and reduce cyclical poverty. Cyclical poverty is an incredibly vital component of the conceptual paper because of the correlation between mental illness and poverty (Bachler et al., 2020). This issue is at the core of this CP and the overall goal of all social workers dealing with Medicaid recipients.
