Nursing research is a fundamental component of the progression and improvement of the professional nursing practice. Nurses practice in various environments, such as hospitals, schools, home health, community health clinics, and skilled nursing facilities. Regardless of the different roles and responsibilities assigned in any practice setting the primary goal, being the patient’s advocate, has and will always remain consistent. The goal is not only to be the patient or client advocate but to deliver paramount care based on evidence-based practice that is achieved through nursing research (Tingen et al., 2009).
The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) considers nursing research to be the vital key to influencing the future progression of the nursing practice by recognizing the specific knowledge and characteristic views of the nursing discipline to support all individuals. The NINR has created a strategic plan to support its mission to solve current health issues and update practices and policies within the profession. The scientific strategy will prioritize research that will address current health issues, is innovative and upholds rigorous standards to achieve the highest possible outcome; discovers solutions across multiple settings, and finally, it will objectively eliminate structural obstacles in order to promote diversity. I believe the priorities are all important factors and when applied will influence the strength of the research and promote multilevel approaches, collaboration, and community engagement (NINR, n.d.).
The defined priorities support the five research lenses used to guide nursing research. The five priorities are health equity, social determinants of health, prevention and health promotion, population and community health, and systems and models of care. The combination of the lenses that can be used allows for great flexibility in the study’s design. The research as seen through each lens is just as important as the manner in which topics are prioritized. The health equality lens aims to remove hurdles and improve health for all. Social determinants of health aim to address the causes of health outcomes and identify ways to limit exposure, circumstances, or susceptibility. Population and community health identify variants in community health and test and evaluate interventions to utilize in a community partnership with nursing. Prevention and health promotion research are also essential to prevent disease burden and improve outcomes. Finally, the systems and models of care lens explore coordinating care and merging information across settings and aid in understanding the impacts of structural practice on quality care and outcomes (NINR, n.d.). Every piece from priorities to lenses targets every angle needed to achieve through nursing research, assessment, outcomes, and interventions.

What is the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR)? This is the leading nursing research that finds answers or solutions to the nursing problems that require immediate action and then communicate practice and policy hence optimizing health and advancing health equity into the future. Here researchers explore and address some of the most important challenges affecting the health of the American people. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the article “Strategic plan”( NINR, 2022–2026), the National Institute of Nursing Research identified five harmonious and cooperation research spectacles or priorities that best leverage the strengths of nursing research and promote multilevel approaches, cross-disciplinary and -sectoral collaboration, and community engagement in research. These priorities include: health equity, social determinants of health, population and community health, prevention and health promotion and systems and models of care. Going back to the first question of discussion board after reviewing the NINR research highlights, I agree with these priorities because the research strategies listed above assist in addressing several areas of the human life to enhance or promote healthy living that increase the quality of life until death. Secondly, the listed strategies include all age groups at multiple stages of life thus promoting holistic care for the whole human spirit, soul and body. These strategies are very important for effective nursing since it takes care of all aspects of human life. For example, health promotion and disease prevention via health education has encouraged healthy living habits and lifestyles. This had assisted in minimizing disease outbreaks in communities hence promoting people health in the community, reduced hospital admissions and cost of health care.
How can the above research initiatives be translated into evidence-based practice in my work environment? Based on the fact that the scientific research, the research initiatives set by National Institute of Nursing Research has given us a piece of proof or evidence that utilization of appropriate technology for the treatment of acute or chronic conditions can improve quality of life and increase life expectancy. Therefore, use of advanced technology to care for patients with chronic pain and terminal illness can be used at my work environment to improve the quality of patient care. For example, using technology like epic to scan patient’s medications can reduce medication errors like giving a patient the wrong medication. In addition to this, the implementation research findings in the nursing care and evaluating the effectiveness of the care in my work environment can assist in improving knowledge of nurses and nursing students at all levels of care. In a nutshell, the research strategies and priorities created by NINR is very essential in improving or promoting healthcare in many hospitals and health related activities.
