According to one author, there are certain performance goals that are needed for those in a management role (Flanagan, 2017). A manager must keep costs down and keep productivity up while striving to meet departmental goals. These goals are directly related to the success of the goods or services provided (Flanagan, 2017). An effective manager needs to have proper planning, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills to achieve the performance goals set for the organization (Flanagan, 2017). Along with these soft skills, the manager will need some more technical skills such as finance, writing, and computing. The soft and hard skills needed to achieve operational proficiency will be the topic of this week’s discussion question.
This discussion requires you to discuss the concept of hard and soft skills used by functional managers as well as to achieve departmental goals and objectives. A manager’s job is to ensure that his department achieves its goals and objectives. If the goals are achieved, chances are the department and organization will see positive growth in business and revenue. If the goals are not achieved, it could mean great losses in many areas.

You are the manager of the cardiac care unit. You have 20 beds. For the past few years, the occupancy has varied between 25% and 60%. There is a downward trend. This is causing a financial strain on the hospital. You have unhappy staff members who fear that their job maybe on the line. You have unhappy senior leaders who are considering massive layoff, reduced funding for other projects, and cutting services. The community is also concerned that they may have to driver further to get cardiac care services.
Initial Post: Management has given you the goal of increasing the occupancy by 15% in 6 months and maintaining it for 12 months. The stretch goal is to have a 20% increase in 15 months. Prepare a table that lists the hard and soft skills that a manager would need to accomplish the goals and appease everyone. In the table, be sure to identify if it is a hard or soft skill, which area of concern it would address, and how it will help attain the stated and stretch goals.
