Step 1: Select a fictional character from a popular story, television show, or movie who either portrays a specific psychological disorder, or who you suspect may meet some or all of the diagnostic criteria for a psychological disorder. Introduce the character you have chosen (e.g., Voldemort from Harry Potter), and the story, show or movie they are from (e.g., Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). Provide a summary of the premise of the story, show, or movie, as well as the role your fictional character plays.
Step 2: Identify the DSM-5 diagnosis or diagnoses you believe the fictional character to have. Explain which of the diagnostic criteria (e.g., DSM-5) the character meets for the disorder(s), describing the relevant symptoms, and providing evidence (examples) from the story, TV show, or movie. Describe which diagnostic criteria the character does not meet, if applicable. It is okay if you do not have enough evidence for every single criteria, but the character should have enough symptoms to make a compelling case that they may have this disorder.
Step 3: Describe the main cause(s) for the disorder (i.e., any etiological factors (e.g., biological, environmental, psychosocial, etc.) that might have contributed to the disorder). Factors to consider may include (but are not limited to):
1. Family background including information about parents, siblings, home environment, SES, ethnicity, age, family dynamics, etc.
2. Family and personal medical history
3. Childhood experiences and attachment to parents
4. Personality traits
5. SES, education level and/or intelligence
6. Significant life events
7. Trauma history (if applicable)
8. Community or cultural factors
9. Other risk factors
Provide at least one citation or reference for an empirical study that supports the role of the etiological factor(s) in the character’s disorder. Include a brief summary of what is known about the role this factor (or these factors) play in the emergence or presentation of the psychological disorder, based on what is presented in the empirical article. Also, provide evidence about the character that their diagnosis may be a result of the etiological factor(s) you have identified. If no such evidence is readily available from the story, show or movie, speculate as to what cause(s) may have contributed to the psychological disorder for the character.
Step 4: Provide two recommendations for therapy or treatment solutions to treat the character’s disorder. Treatments should be appropriate for the diagnosis and may be psychological (i.e., therapy) or psychopharmacological (i.e., drugs or medicine). Provide evidence to support the choice of this treatment (cite empirical study or studies to support decision using APA format).
1) Select one peer-reviewed empirical research article for each recommended therapy or treatment (total of two peer-reviewed empirical articles). Your selected articles should provide evidence of the efficacy of the treatment for the diagnosis or disorder you have identified for the fictional character.
2) Provide a brief summary or review of the key points of the article (e.g., methods and results), and include a clear description of the treatment.
3) Provide a rationale for why you believe this treatment to be appropriate for the character. This should include describing the benefits of the treatment for the character (e.g., explain how symptoms will be addressed using the suggested approaches), as well as the known and potential limitations of the treatment.
4) DO NOT plagiarize! The summary of the study, and the limitations and benefits must be in your own words. No not copy the article abstract.
STEP 5: Write your paper!
The format expected is that of the American Psychological Association (APA style). Your essay should be between 7 and 10 double-spaced pages in length (excluding references), written in 12-point Times New Roman with 1-inch (2.5cm) margins all around.
Your essay should include the following:
1. Title page
a. Introduction: Brief introduction; description of show, movie or story, and the fictional character.
b. Diagnosis: DSM-5 diagnosis and relevant symptoms.
c. Etiology: Potential cause or contributing factor(s) to disorder and reference.
d. Treatment: Suggested treatments, including benefits and limitations.
e. Conclusion: Brief conclusion.
2. References: Include references all empirical journal articles cited. In-text citations and reference list should be in APA format.
3. Attachments: Attach PDF copies of etiology article, and two treatment articles. Copies of additional articles referenced in essay are not required. These attachments are not included in the page count of your assignment.
