This model was designed by two members of the IHI to set a framework for healthcare as a system to address the requirements of healthcare reform (Institute for Healthcare Improvement [IHI], 2022). The initial elements of the model included patient satisfaction, population health and reduction of healthcare cost. As a widely adopted model, this group went on to add the fourth aim in 2014, healthcare team well-being. This new model was published as the Quadruple Aim (Arnetz et al., 2020). As a DNP nurse leading quality improvement (QI) initiatives, the Quadruple Aim framework will serve to align and guide initiatives related to healthcare reform (IHI, 2022). It is important for the DNP to be the advocate for healthcare reform in the care setting where they serve. Adopting the Quadruple Aim focus in strategic planning will be important. The DNP, as a population health leader, will be able to advocate for health equity, the fifth aim recently adopted as the Quintuple Aim (IHI, 2022). The role of advocate will be a primary focus for the new DNP. As an advocate, the DNP will lead non-traditional QI initiatives that focus on ensuring the patient is the center and all patients have equal access to care and resources. References Arnetz, B. This organization was established initially as a small group of families in 1979 and has thrived into the largest leading voice on mental health (National Alliance and Mental Illness, 2020). This organization is committed to educating thousands of Americans through NAMI State Organizations and NAMI affiliates on matters related to mental illness and ensuring they get the support and information they need. Through advocacy, NAMI formulates national public policy for people with mental illness. This is achieved by offering volunteer leaders tools, resources, and skills that are useful in promoting access to recovery-based supports and services, such as permanent supportive housing in all states. NAMI is committed to listening and responding to hundreds of thousands of requests every year, providing free referrals, vital information, and support needed to help one deal with mental illness. Finally, the organization is committed to leading by providing public awareness events and activities, such as Mental illness Awareness Week and NAMI walks. This is done by collaborating with the media to ensure the community understands the significance of mental health and successfully fights the stigma linked to mental illness. What was Learned that Could be Beneficial to DNP Nurses Leading Quality Improvement Initiatives Starting with the children and teen infographic, I learned that at least 1 out of 6 adolescents aged 12-17 had experienced a major depressive episode. In addition, three million had serious thoughts of suicide and a 31% increase in mental-health-related emergency department visits. The mental health facts infographic revealed that among the adults in the ., at least 1 in 20 experienced a serious mental illness, 1 in 15 experienced both substance use disorder and mental illness, and more than 12 million had serious suicidal thoughts. Using the multicultural mental health facts infographic, I learned that in five adults in America, one had experienced a mental illness. Nearly 1 in 25 (10 million) adults in America live with a serious mental illness (National Alliance and Mental Illness, 2020). These facts can be beneficial to assist DNP nurses in developing quality improvement initiatives that can help reduce the prevalence of mental illness. The information can assist in the development of quality improvement projects seeking to improve the screening practices for common mental health conditions such as depression. Such programs should be culturally sensitive and responsive to the unique needs of patients (Gopalkrishnan, 2018). A DNP-prepared nurse can use the information to educate patients and families on matters related to mental health and diagnose, treat, and manage mental illness. Information that Was Surprising to Learn The surprising information to learn is the prevalence of mental illness among children and teenagers. Based on the infographic, more than three million had serious thoughts of suicide. This increase in suicidal rate is alarming depicting that many children are experiencing emotional trauma due to various psychosocial stressors, such as poor communication, lack of interaction with friends and teachers, hostile home environment, and study-related pressure (National Alliance and Mental Illness, 2020). I did not expect the prevalence to be such high. What to Be Learned I would like to know about various interventions that have been put in place to deal with mental illness among children and teenagers and their effectiveness. Equally, I would like to know whether NAMI recognizes that the key concepts of recovery, resiliency, and support are vital elements towards improving the wellness and quality of all persons affected by mental illness. Finally, I would like to know potential barriers to vulnerable people such as the homeless seeking help, and whether NAMI has solutions to address the barriers. References Gopalkrishnan, N. (2018).
