Teaching and learning. This is the focus of this course in Educational Psychology. While some of you may strive to become an elementary, secondary, or college educator someday, we recognize that all of you may have different goals.
The M1.4 assignment provides you with two options from which to choose. Option 1 is focused on exploring the Excelsior College online library and locating sources related to educational psychology. Option 2 provides you with an opportunity to conduct an interview with a teacher or corporate trainer.
Assignment Instructions
Option 1: Educational Psychology Research
If you select Option 1, you will conduct some exploratory research in the Excelsior College online library. Follow these steps to complete the option 1 assignment:
Visit the Excelsior College online library and explore the educational psychology resources that are available.
Choose two different research studies in educational psychology that explore at least two of the following: instructional strategies, classroom management, assessment practices.
Decide what kind of research the study you chose describes (some examples would be descriptive, experimental, or correlational).
Write a brief summary of your research study and include your thoughts about whether it was useful research and why/why not.
Option 2: Interview with a Teacher (K-12 or Higher Education) or a Corporate Trainer
If you select Option 2, you will interview a person who is/was in the role of a teacher or corporate trainer. The interview will focus on how the teacher/trainer used research findings to make decisions about instructional strategies, classroom management, and assessment practices. The interviewee must provide examples. The written portion of this assignment is an account of the questions asked, responses collected, and an analysis of your experience as the interviewer.
Below is a list of questions you might consider asking the person you are interviewing. Keep in mind that the focus on this interview is to gather information about using research to make decisions in an academic or corporate training environment.
Do you teach differently than you did when you began teaching? Why?
Do you ever read research studies in professional journals?
How do you stay abreast of the latest research in education?
How has the study of educational psychology affected your teaching?
Have you ever conducted a research study of your own?
What kinds of conclusions have you reached through informal research (your day-to-day observations of your students)?
How do these conclusions shape your teaching?
Once you have conducted your interview, you will write a 3-5 page paper that:
Lists the questions asked.
Documents the responses for each question.
Analyzes your experience as the interviewer.
Describes what you learned about using research to inform teaching practice.
Summarizes ways you might implement what you learned in your own classroom or training environment.
