The purpose of this project was to develop an algorithm and education that assists nurses with the insertion of nasogastric tubes in the acute care inpatient community hospital setting. The intended outcome is to increase nurse knowledge and comfort with placing nasogastric tubes at the bedside, while also decreasing frequency of requests for fluoroscopy guided placement.

Reflection and Identification of the Problem
1. Identification of Problem âYou will start with a clear identification of the problem. The identified problem or area of concern should be based on a practice issue and/or literature review that depicts a need in the area you have chosen to explore in your future APRN role.
Part 2 includes publishing three sections: Introductory materials that set the context (A), Review of the Literature (B), and Methods (C).
A: Part A will include:

Introduction: The introduction provides background information regarding the topic that will be addressed. This includes information from current literature, national organizations (e.g. CDC) or professional/governmental websites that identify concerns, issues, or gaps of knowledge that relate to the identified area of concern. You will include current data, including statistics as appropriate (local, regional or national) that substantiates the need to address the area of concern or identifies specific gaps in these areas.
Purpose Statement: This statement clearly and concisely identifies the purpose of the project. It should include the topic being explored, an explicit inquiry question (if appropriate), the variables being examined, population, setting and outcomes. When you reflect on the statement, ask yourself: will the problem I am examining be resolved based on this statement? For more information on writing the purpose statement, refer to the most current edition of Bonnel & Smithâs proposal writing book (see below).
Theory(ies) and Framework(s): You must select an appropriate theory(ies) (at least 1 nursing theory must be applied) and a framework or model (if indicated) to support the development, implementation and analysis of your project. The theory/framework will guide the development of your project. Keep in mind that if you are completing a teaching project, you will need to include discussion of an educational theory. Remember to cite primary sources of any theory/framework/model you used.
Significance to Nursing:
1. APRN Role: You will relate your project to the role of the APRN, specific to your program (NP or CNS).
2. Quality and Safety Education in Nursing (QSEN): You should reference professional source documents (e.g. Graduate QSEN Competencies, Health & Medicine Division of the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine, other safety/quality sources) in the explanation of how the project addresses quality and safety.
B: Review of the Literature (ROL) – You will conduct a review and synthesis of the literature that is systematic in approach and will support the need for this project. The review will also examine best evidence in the implementation of this project to support planned strategies.
a. Identify databases used to conduct your ROL that will support the need for this project. For example, CINAHL, ProQuest, Clinical Key, PubMed. Remember to keep track of keywords and MESH terms used in your search.
b. Synthesize the literature. Refer to the following useful resources:
