Infectious diseases are the leading cause of death in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) for people of all ages (Merson, et al, 2020). LMICs use public health programs to prevent specific infectious diseases with vector control, access to clean water, improving sanitation, education about safe sex, and vaccination programs. Some countries do not have enough funds for surveillance systems, vaccine hesitancy in the communities, and trained medical staff to administer vaccines (Merson, et al, 2020). A big obstacle for LMICs is lack of funding, and populations living in poverty. Poverty is associated with malnutrition that causes the immune system to become susceptible to infections and increases the risk for morbidity and mortality. Unsanitary drinking water, lack of access to health care and education, and living conditions with many people are obstacles associated with poverty and contribute to higher infectious disease rates. Globalization has impacted sub-Saharan Africa by increasing the poverty gap between poor and rich, and increasing rural immigration (rural exodus) to urban locations, impacting the health care system (Poku & Kabambi, 2021). Health consequences from influences due to globalization are increased alcohol and smoking use, and diseases and infections from mining. The three pieces of advice I would give the Minister of Health in sub-Saharan Africa is creating more vaccine and infectious disease education programs, creating more health safety regulations for mining of natural resources, and providing LMICs with clean water supplies and self-sustaining food resources. LMICs are at a higher risk for contracting infectious disease and many rural populations may not understand the importance of a vaccine. Many infectious diseases are contributed to malnutrition and increases morbidity and mortality rates.
