Standards of practice are a way to keep people in the medical field in check, especially nurses. Patient safety is a must and by having certain rules and regulations that nurses and other medicals workers must follow, it makes it easier and safer for the patients. They know they will be receiving quality care and that their caretakers must abide by the government rules and regulations.
We should use all the standards of nursing practice to be effective in our fields as future nurses. Each one of them is unique and effective on their own, but combining them all will give a better health outcomes and safety outcomes for both patients and nurses.
My specialty area is the intensive care unit (ICU) and the standards I think are used the most are assessments, planning, prescriptive authority and treatment, evaluation. The nurse caring for the patient in that unit is assessing what is wrong with the patient and making a care plan for that patient, the nurse is also planning how to care for that patient and can prescribe/implement treatment, use knowledge on nutritional supplements and evaluate so many different strategies to attain the goal in the care plan. These standards are all government (federal regulations) supported to make sure patients are being well taken care of.
Differentiated practice is how the nurses can practice. Some practice based off their licensure and others based on their educational background. It is a combination of different things that affect the roles and function of a nurse. In my practice (ICU), differential practice fits. Starting with the leadership capabilities, the nurse is caring for that patient in his or her own way. It might be different from how another nurse does it, but the results will be the same, they are all working toward the same goal which is to help the patient feel better and leave the hospital. It’s an environment in which the nurse is using their level of experience, expertise, and education to achieve a goal. It is a solo environment.
