Whether you are in an elevator, at a business reception, or standing in line at the commissary, meeting someone new is always a potential opportunity. Use this first speech as a way to practice your “elevator pitch.” It should be no more than one to two minutes long, and it should be creative. You can promote yourself for a new job, pitch a new product idea, or promote your current organization. Make sure to clearly identify your target audience (who you are delivering the speech to) and how you/your proposal can benefit them. Remember that facts and statistics will only get you so far; telling a story and making a connection with your listener are the keys to influencing people.
