Condition selection – In the first course module, you will be given an opportunity within the discussion forums to pick a special need, chronic illness, and/or genetic syndrome from a list provided. I chose Down Syndrome so you’re going to talk about it.
Caregiver Factsheet – You will create a 2 to 4 page educational factsheet for parents or other individuals (i.e., teachers, grandparents) who may be caring for a child with the condition or special needs you have identified. This factsheet should use a minimum of four sources of evidence-based literature (see below for details) and be written at a 5th to 8thgrade reading level. Feel free to be creative, but make sure it looks professional.
You will need to include the following components:
definition of disease or condition
cause of the disease or condition
characteristics or signs and symptoms of the disease or condition
include at least two other categories such as: diagnosis, treatments, day-to-day routines, commonly asked questions, educational expectations and/or accommodations, what to watch for, available support, etc.
The factsheet should be submitted to Canvas by the posted due date.
Poster Presentation – After you have developed your factsheet, you will create a poster with the information you have developed. This may be as simple as attaching your printed factsheet to a tri-fold or poster board or can be more involved if you wish. These posters will be shared with the entire class and you should be prepared to answer questions on your poster. Each student will visit each poster in rotation and will be required to ask one question of the presenter. These questions and answers will be submitted to canvas and comprise 5% of the assignment.
Expectations:
1. A minimum of three (3) evidence-based sources should be included in your final materials. These could include sources such as evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and systematic reviews like Cochrane (www.cochrane.org), the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality (www.ahrq.gov), and the National Institute of Health (https://www.nih.gov/). Other sources that provides clinical practice guidelines, as well as the latest research on a specific condition, are professional association websites. These websites will typically have a ‘research,’ ‘science’, or ‘professionals’ tab (i.e., Muscular Dystrophy Association – https://www.mda.org/science). Finally, consider interviewing a parent of a child with your selected topic or a pediatric nurse/professional as a primary source. These individuals can often provide a unique perspective. An interview template is provided in the syllabus below (Appendix D).
2. In addition to clinical practice guidelines and systematic reviews, include a minimum of one (1) research article from a peer-reviewed pediatric nursing journal featuring current research (within the last five years) on your subject. Perform a literature search using the library articles and databases section. Search healthcare/nursing databases such as Cinahl, Medline, or Ovid for journal articles written in the last five years. Avoid using your textbook as a primary source. All sources need to be current from the last 5 years. All references must be cited according to APA guidelines.
Here is the example of factsheet.
