The chosen theory for my specialty is the Oremâs self-care theory. The self-care theory places emphasis on the self and helps the individual take responsibility for their self-care. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I would be treating patients that have mental health disorders. Many of the patients would not be able to care for themselves, applying the self-care theory will allow the individuals to find ways to perform daily living activities (Tang et al., 2022). Interventions based on Oremâs theory focuses on the patients and improving their nursing ability and maintaining a good psychological state (Tang et al., 2022). Self-care is activities that people participate in to maintain, improve, or restore their health (Khademian et al., 2020).
Another theory that I will apply to my professional career is Peplauâs theory of interpersonal relations. Peplauâs theory is an interpersonal process that allows health professionals to engage in therapeutic relationship with people in need of care (Hagerty et al., 2017). The concept of the theory is very helpful for patients seeking mental health services, as it provides therapeutic relationship between client and provider (Hagerty et al., 2017). The theory I will not use for my patients is the theory of bureaucratic caring. The theory is more on an administrative level, and it does not connect the patients with the nurse practitioners. Bureaucratic caring theory is based on a community level, and it does not consider the patientâs individualistic experience (Stephen & Zoucha, 2020).
