This week’s assignment is going to focus on identity formation. Be sure to read Chapter 6 of the textbook, paying special attention to Pages 233 – 235 before completing this assignment. Erik Erikson’s 5th Stage is “Identity versus Role Confusion.” In this stage, a person either establishes their identity or they experience role confusion. Role confusion is when someone does not know their “identity” or what their “role” is. Rather than feeling secure and confident in their identity, they feel confused about how they fit in. Experiencing role confusion is actually a necessary step in the process of successfully establishing one’s own identity. James Marcia developed a theory to describe the process of establishing one’s identity, and it’s based on where someone stands related to the crisis of finding their identity and the level of committment they have made in establishing their identity. There are four possible statuses that a person can be in. Each status contains the crisis that a person is facing, and where they stand related to making a committment. The 4 potential statuses are: Identity Diffusion – A person is not focused on the crisis of establishing their identity, and they have not made a committment in the area of identity formation. Identity Foreclosure – A person has not faced the crisis of carefully examining their choices when forming their identity, but they have made a committment to their identity anyway. Identity Moratorium – A person is focusing on the crisis of identity formation. They are trying to determine what their identity is, but they have not made a committment yet. Identity Achievement – A person has faced the crisis of identity achievement, and has carefully considered their choices. They have also made a committment to their identity. This is an example of what this might look like in the arena of career choice: Identity Diffusion – Miranda has not taken very much time to consider what she wants to do for her career, and she has not made any decisions regarding where her career is going. Identity Foreclosure – Miranda has not taken very much time to consider what she wants to do for her career, but she has committed to working in the family business as her career. Identity Moratorium – Miranda is carefully considering her career choice options. She has done an internship, and has taken a few classes to determine her interest level in various subjects, but she has not made a committment regarding her career direction. Identity Achievement – Miranda has carefully considered her career choice options. She has done an internship, and has taken a few classes to determine her interest level in various subjects. Based on the time she spent exploring her options, and giving careful thought, she has committed to becoming an attorney. For your assignment, provide an example of what James Marcia’s 4 statuses might look like in the arena of career choice (basically recreate the example you just read in the red font section, but make it your own. Then create 2 more examples of what the 4 different statuses might look like, but make those examples on identity formation related to something other than career choice.
