We have already covered some of the basics of experimental design: We know that in an experiment we are testing cause-and-effect relationships between two variables. One variable we manipulate (the independent variable, IV) in order to determine if, as a result of that manipulation, a change occurs in an outcome variable (dependent variable, DV). This week, we ask the next basic question:
How do we know for sure that any change we note in the DV was REALLY due to our manipulation of the IV?
That is, did we control for other possible explanations to ensure that the only reasonable cause is our manipulation of the IV? Answering that question very much depends on the type of experimental design we have constructefjkd, as you will see in this week’s reading!
