As Americaâs population grows so does our demand for healthcare and healthcare reform grows as well. In today healthcare society, the advance practices nurse plays a vital role in improving the access to healthcare needs and meeting the demands of aging population. The advance practice nurses bring a variety of skills which are the following:âordering, performing and interpreting diagnostic test such labs work and x-rays; prescribing medication and other treatment; managing patientâs overall careâ (Dunphy et al. 2019 p. 23). In this discussion will identify the barriers that the advance practice nurse faces in the healthcare setting which are the following: state practice and licensure, physician related issues. We will also discuss how the advance practice nurse will overcome these barriers.
One of barriers that the advance practice nurse will face in the healthcare setting is state practice and licensure. The advance practice nurse licensure is controlled by the state in which the advance practice nurse is practicing in. According to the Peterson she reports on barriers to practice and the impact on healthcare for the advance practice nurse. She concludes that âState licensure regulates NP practice and is a barrier to NPs fully practicing of their education and training. Licensure and practice laws for NPs vary per state, by restrictive practice, reduced practice, and full practice despite a main goal of full practice authorityâ (Peterson, 2017 p.80).
Another barrier that the advance practice nurse will face in the healthcare setting is physician related issues. As chronic illness increases so does the demand for healthcare providers. To meet these demands the advance practice nurse and the physician must effectively collaborate and manage patient care. According to the Torrens et al. (2020), they report on Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of the advanced nurse practitioner role in primary care settings. They conclude that âBuilding collaborative relationships with other healthcare professionals and negotiating the role are critical to the success of the implementation of the advanced nurse practitioner roleâ (Torrens et al. 2020 p. 20).
The final thing will discuss is how the advance practice nurse will overcome these barriers. To address these barriers that were discussed in the above paragraphs and any other barriers or policies that may be on the horizon the advanced practice nurse must pursue and fight to overturn these barriers and fight to reject any policies on the horizon. In the article by Kleinpell et al. (2022), they reported on breaking down institutional barriers to advance practice registered nurse practice. They conclude that nurse leaders need to âplay a significant role in reducing outdated and unnecessary health system practice barriers for APRNs. Nurse leaders should do the following: Identify existing institutional barriers to APRN practice; Actively support and target the removal of institutional barriers to APRN practice; Understand and implement the APRN Consensus Model in the regulation of APRNs in their respective institutionsâ (Kleinpell et al 2022 p.45).
