This assignment will involve three main tasks:
1. Identify and explain the argument presented in the article, including the main claims and/or principles used
2. Critique the argument by identifying weaknesses or problems in the argument
3. Evaluate and discuss what impact the identified weaknesses/problems have on the
overall argument – can the argument be repaired or is it ‘beyond repair’ (i.e. wrong)?
While you may find strengths as well as weaknesses within the article, we want you to focus on
only the weaknesses.
Weaknesses or problems in an argument could include (but are not limited to) factors such as: relying on a faulty premise or assumption; relying on inaccurate empirical evidence; being logically inconsistent; failing to define a concept critical to the argument etc.
Note, you do not have to identify every weakness; rather you should limit your critique to one or two weaknesses so you can adequately explain and discuss these in sufficient depth. It is not enough just to disagree with the argument; you must establish why readers should be unconvinced by it (i.e. by identifying and discussing weaknesses/problems with the argument)
