The aim of this assignment is to provide you with the opportunity to research and design an experiment in the area of Behavioural neuroscience and associative learning. You will be required to research one of the areas listed below, provide 1) a literature reviews including a critique of the literature, 2) propose one experiment (you must include a method section that clearly outlines the experimental method, including participants, materials (what you need to run the experiment) and procedure) 3) a set of expected of results and 4) a discussion of the impact of the results. A research study proposal is guided by the relevant literature in the research area of interest and the question you want to answer. For your research proposal you have to reference at least five peer-reviewed journal articles. Research areas You may choose one of the following areas for your proposed experiment. For example if you choose to propose an experiment on the neural substrates of fear extinction, your proposed experiment may focus on a specific area of the brain or a particular receptor, but it must be in the area of conditioned fear extinction. For each of the assigned topics there is a paper available on Moodle to help you begin your research into this area. • Memory reconsolidation as therapeutic intervention – designing a human or animal study that investigates the therapeutic potential of memory reconsolidation (or seeks to understand the neural mechanisms of memory reconsolidation). • The dopaminergic hypothesis of schizophrenia – designing a human or animal study that seeks for a better understanding of the neurobiology underlying psychosis in schizophrenia • Understanding and improving fear extinction – designing a human or animal study that attempts to improve extinction following fear conditioning (or seeks to better understand the neural mechanisms of extinction processes). Research Proposal Structure Introduction – literature review and critique of the existing literature You should provide a section that covers a literature review of the relevant research in your chosen area. This introduction should outline the background literature in order to provide a rationale for your research proposal. This section is similar to the introduction in a research report. There are examples available for you that demonstrate the structure and purpose of the introduction. You need to provide a critical analysis of the current research in order to highlight the gap the in the literature that you would like to address in your proposed experiment. Research aim and hypothesis You need to clearly outline your aim and hypothesis, this is included at the end of your introduction Proposed Experiment You need to provide a section which outlines your research design, you should include a participant section (what are the characteristics of your participants – human or animal), materials (what is needed to conduct the experiment), method (how the study is actually conducted). Expected Results You need to present your expected pattern of results in a graph, these should outline the expected pattern of the differences between your groups or conditions. You may include expected results and alternative results if you feel your results could turn out either way. In this section you only need to provide a graph and brief description of the results. For example, it is expected that group 1 will have a significantly reduced fear compared with group 2. Discussion You need to include a section which explains the expected results and the impact or importance of these results on the research area. The discussion section is shorter than the introduction and should provide a brief explanation of the potential findings and the impact of these findings (as well as acknowledging any potential limitations). Submission Information Formatting: Your literature review should be formatted according to APA 6th or APA 7th formatting. You should use 12-point times new roman or Arial font and double spaced. You should submit your assessment as a Word document. References: You must include both in-text citations and a final reference list formatting according to APA 6th or APA 7th edition formatting.
