We are all considered amateur social psychologists because we always try to understand those we interact with which leads to each one of us developing their own theory about human nature. However, our everyday understanding of social behavior lacks the rigor and impartiality of careful scientific Âinvestigation. Systematic research is important because, in many instances, âcomÂmon senseâ hypotheses about human behavior turn out to be false when carefully investigated. Social psycholgy is a science that depends on research.
We do not deny that people behave in ways that might involve unpleasant, destructive, or bizarre behaviors due to individual psychopathology, but we tend to find it more useful to try to understand the situational variables that move otherwise ânormalâ people to engage in unappetizing or seemingly crazy behavior.
