Chapter 11 offers a working definition of social psychology and explores key issues and questions; such as:
*How do we explain others’ behavior?
*How are people influenced by one another?
*Why do they accept social influence—that is, what’s in it for them?
*What are the variables that increase or decrease the effectiveness of social influence?
*How does one person come to like another person?
*How does a person develop prejudices against an ethnic or racial group?
We are all considered amateur social psychologists because we always try to understand those we interact with which leads to each one of us developing their own theory about human nature. However, our everyday understanding of social behavior lacks the rigor and impartiality of careful scientific ­investigation. Systematic research is important because, in many instances, “com­mon sense” hypotheses about human behavior turn out to be false when carefully investigated. Social psycholgy is a science that depends on research.
We do not deny that people behave in ways that might involve unpleasant, destructive, or bizarre behaviors due to individual psychopathology, but we tend to find it more useful to try to understand the situational variables that move otherwise “normal” people to engage in unappetizing or seemingly crazy behavior.
