III.Instructions for the Written Paper
For each movie, you will write a paper (three pages, double-spaced with one-inch margins). Movie papers should adhere to the style guide of the American Psychological Association (APA), most notably the guidelines for citations and references. The APA style: is summarized at this URL: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/section/2/10/. Each paper is worth 75 points for a total of 150 points for the two written papers. Please see the Course Schedule for the due dates.
You are expected to use the textbook and to provide a minimum of two credible scientific references to support your assessment. A credible reference is a journal article published in the medical or scientific literature. A credible reference is NOT an online science item and (heaven forbid) not Wikipedia. Online sources of information or even science news items are generally written by science writers, who may not be entirely familiar with the research. Credible references (journal articles) are generally written by the scientists or clinicians who designed, conducted and interpreted the results of the research. The best source of credible scientific references is PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed), which is maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. These two references must be cited in proper APA style (but single spaced) on a fourth page following your three-page document. You must have read the journal article in order to list it as a reference.
Your paper should consists of the three following parts:
Part 1. The Character
ï· Put yourself into the shoes of the protagonist. Provide a brief background of the character (e.g., socioeconomic class, environment, stressors, any other pertinent info, etc.). If there is more than one protagonist, pick one character to focus on.
ï· Analyze his or her behavior. What are you feeling? What are your thoughts? Do you feel alienated? How do you think other people perceive you? Are you paranoid?
Part 2. The Drug
ï· Discuss the pharmacology of the abused drug in question. If multiple drugs appeared in the movie, pick one drug to focus on. How does it work? What are its biopsychological effects?
Part 3. The Film
ï· You are now a film critic. What is your opinion on how drug abuse was portrayed in this film? Do you feel that the fictional portrayal was accurate/inaccurate? Why? Provide examples.
ï· What stereotypes of the drug abuser do you feel were illustrated?
ï· Did the screenwriter portray drug abuse as a criminal activity or medical disorder?
ï· Did the movie simply tell a story or did it try to produce understanding of the
protagonist’s abuse of drugs?
