Purpose: The essay evaluates the student’s ability to engage critically with the course material. You will demonstrate the capacity to synthesize, evaluate, compare and contrast various contributions from key thinkers over time, thus demonstrating understanding of the cumulative nature of progress in the field of psychology. The essay format is important for this course material, in that it requires clear articulation and critical analysis of important ideas and developments in the history of psychology, and not merely recognition or recall of facts. Moreover, the essay format is important to the major, as this is a writing-intensive course. Students are given an option between 2 prompts in an effort to make room for their own interests, based on the important idea from Self-Determination Theory that motivation is improved when some level of autonomy is afforded (in this case being able to pick a topic).
Write a 3-5 page essay in response to one of the following prompts. Make use of the readings and resources provided, as well as any results of your own additional research on the topic. While references beyond the textbook are not required for this essay, students using outside sources are encouraged to prioritize scholarly resources (e.g., journal articles, reference books) over other types of resources (e.g., newspaper articles, magazines, unvetted websites, encyclopedias, etc.). Choose the prompt that interests you the most:
Prompt #1: The Renaissance was a time of change with regard to ideas, new discoveries or inventions, historical events, and general attitudes. Identify two significant persons from that period who characterize these dramatic changes. Be sure and choose two individuals who represent relatively distinctive contributions to change (rather than two individuals who essentially represent the same change or area of change; areas include philosophy, art, science, theology, etc.). Comment briefly on how these changes have fared in history since then: what has endured, what has not? Make your answer personal, by including your own reactions to and evaluations of the individuals you choose (What drew you to them? Are your reactions to them positive, negative or mixed? Why do you think they are important to remember?) . The point of this question is to demonstrate an understanding of the significance of the changes that began during the Renaissance for the field of psychology. Make sure your answer relates to psychology. For instance, if an artist is chosen: How does the artist’s work represent change? What do those changes imply as far as the changing psychology of the Renaissance? How relevant are those changes today? Similarly, if a religious figure is chosen, focus on the implications of that individuals’ legacy for psychological thought, not just theology or ecclesiology.
Prompt #2: Compare and contrast Greek, Christian and Middle-Eastern (i.e., Islamic & Jewish thinkers) ideas about what constitutes “the Good Life”. Be sure and include at least one unique contributor/contribution from each perspective. At the same time, be selective; for instance, choose one key representative for each group; or, choose one (or more) characteristic(s) that is shared by most of the representatives within each group. Do not try to cover all of the ideas about the Good Life that every Greek or Christian or Middle-Eastern thinker held, which will result in a very superficial paper. Compare the 3 views drawing on similarities or areas of agreement; contrast them, bringing out incompatibilities or areas of divergence between the three. Be sure and include your personal reflections and reactions. The objective is to recognize how early psychological ideas built on each other, as well as diverged from one another.
