Action Plans
Benchmarking is an essential tool determining the present situation in comparison to others or even yourself. For example, if I say my unit only had 5 falls last month and we are doing great, that mean nothing. However, if I say we have 4.4 falls per 1000 patient days of care, you have a better picture of how we are doing but not completely. If I tell you that the national average for like-units is 8.5 falls per 1000 days of care then you know I am doing well. But if I say that for the last 6 months we have average 12.2, then you know that the unit is in serious trouble and needs to improve. So, benchmarking needs to be used appropriately and the data used effectively. Data needs to have a context in order to be used effectively. Does this make sense?
Another process is explained in the book that is similar to a QM tool, the PDCA cycle. What are âaction plansâ? Why is it useful to an organization?
