TOPIC EMOTION: NURTURANT LOVE General Instructions: If you are writing this handbook chapter, you will be asked to address all five of the (below) topics in your chapter. To address the topics, please draw on the textbook, the course lectures, assigned empirical papers, and additional empirical papers. For each topic, you are asked to describe at least 1-2 empirical articles that addresses the overall topic of the question. In total, your chapter should cite at least four empirical articles (you can also cite more than four). If you have put in substantial effort and still cannot find an article examining your emotion for a particular topic, it is permissible to include 2-3 articles for one of the other questions (so that you are still citing at least four empirical articles across the full chapter). 1. How does your emotion influence information processing? a. Based on the information provided in the textbook about how emotions influence systematic vs. heuristic judgment, would your emotion promote systematic or heuristic judgments? Be sure to explain the rationale for this prediction. b. Conduct a literature search to identify at least one empirical article examining how your emotion influences how people process information. Here, please describe the key methods, results, and take-home message(s) of that paper. You should integrate this information into your chapter to address the broader question of how and why your emotion influences information processing. If it is possible to find an article that addresses attention to systematic vs. heuristic, that would be very useful to describe and integrate into your chapter. (But this type article may not be available, in which case including another article on other types of attentional processes is completely fine.) 2. How does your emotion influence attention? a. Based on the empirical reading for the week focusing on cognition – Ford et al., 2010 – would your emotion bias attention towards threats or rewards? Be sure to explain the rationale for this prediction. b. Conduct a literature search to identify at least one empirical article examining how your emotion influences attention. Here, please describe the key methods, results, and take-home message(s) of that paper. You should integrate this information into your chapter to address the broader question of how and why your emotion influences attention. If it is possible to find an article that addresses attention to threats vs. rewards, that would be very useful to describe and integrate into your chapter. (But this type article may not be available, in which case another article on other types of attentional processes is completely fine.) 3. How does your emotion influence memory? a. Based on the textbook and research cited in the Week 8 lecture, would your emotion influence what people remember? Why or why not? If so, in what way(s) would your emotion bias memory? Be sure to explain the rationale for these predictions. b. Conduct a literature search to identify at least one empirical article examining how your emotion influences memory. Here, please describe the key methods, results, and take-home message(s) of that paper. You should integrate this information into your chapter to address the broader question of how and why your emotion influences memory. 4. How does your emotion influence decision making? a. Taking inspiration from the research described in your textbook (pp. 290-305), identify one judgment or decision that could be improved by listening to your emotion and one that may be made worse by listening to your emotion. These decisions could include (but are not limited to) accuracy, risk, creativity, stereotyping, purchases, sharing resources, morality, etc. Be sure to explain the rationale. b. Conduct a literature search to identify at least one empirical article examining how your emotion influences the decisions people make (for better or for worse). Here, please describe the key methods, results, and take-home message(s) of that paper. You should integrate this information into your chapter to address the broader question of how and why your emotion influences decision making.
