Hypertension
• Describe what the Hypertension (etiology; s/s…) is and the outcome if not managed carefully.
For newly Somali refugees. Write it non-medical terms, no jargon, in layman term, in 5th or 6 grade understanding. Do only this bullet, this part of a group project.
Things to consider: (Somali Refugees)
• Many of these individuals do not have a concept calories, fats, carbohydrates…. Start with simple explanations.
• Many of these individuals have very limited understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Teach these concepts at a very basic level.
• These individuals have limited economic resources.
• Recommendations should be simple and examples should be presented.
• These individuals do not know the hazards of excessive amounts of “Fast food” and soft drinks.
• In some of these cultures being overweight is a sign of wealth and status.
• Rates of diabetes and HTN are higher in most immigrant groups than in the general United States population.
• Some of these individuals are unable to read or write in their own language.
• These individuals may practice significant dietary restrictions related to religious or cultural beliefs.
When you are at the IRC introduce yourself and shake hands when appropriate. During your presentation be friendly, smile, and make eye contact. If you are adventurous it would be beneficial to learn the word for hello in the language of your refugee group. (Arabic, Swahili
1. Share your Presentation with your instructor on google drive a minimum of one week before the presentation date.
2. Slides must contain the student name, the script of what will be said by the student, and the reference of where the material was obtained
3. Slides should have limited images. Using too many images on a slide will make it confusing and reduce the impact.
4. Slides, visual aids and handouts MAY NOT have more than one or two words in English. Instead use pictures and graphics.
5. Material must be based on a credible source such as the American Diabetic Association, My Plate. org or American Dietetic Association.
6. Avoid redundancy, diet and exercise recommendations should apply to both DMII and HTN prevention.
7. Presentation should be 30 minutes in length. Each student will have about 4 minutes to present their material. 3-6 slides per student should be enough.
