Competency is defined as the ability to doing something well. The American Nurses Association defines competency as the expected and measurable level of nursing performance that integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment based on scientific knowledge (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Competencies are vital in nursing to ensure high quality of patient care. There are thirteen evidence-based practice (EBP) competencies for practicing registered nurses and another eleven for advanced prancing nurses to enhance the quality of healthcare (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Competencies that could be applied to the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project include: questioning clinical practice to improve quality of care, participating in formulating a clinical question using the PICOT format, searches for external evidence to answer focused clinical questions, participates in clinical appraising, collects practice data for clinical decision making, integrates evidence gathered from external and internal sources to plan EBP changes, implements practice changes based on evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences to improve care process and patient outcomes, evaluate outcomes, disseminate best practice supported by evidence, and participates in strategies to sustain an EBP culture (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
Another competency for the DNP role includes communicating best evidence to individuals, groups, colleagues, and policy makers. Communication and collaboration are vital in all advanced practice nursing roles. Competencies should be integrated through many roles including RN’s, APRN’s, managers, educators, and leaders (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). Using inter professional collaboration and communication can help identify a clinical problem and implement best practice changes. For example, nurse leaders must develop a business plan and calculate the return on investment for EBP changes. It is necessary for collaboration and communication because all different roles play a vital part.
